Warren County faces pediatric pneumonia outbreak, health officials say

Pneumonia is a serious respiratory infection that affects the lungs and can cause fever, cough, difficulty breathing, and chest pain. Pneumonia can be caused by various microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and can be prevented by immunization, adequate nutrition, and environmental factors. Pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of death in children under 5 years old, killing more than 700,000 children worldwide in 20191.

In Warren County, Ohio, health department officials have declared an outbreak of pediatric pneumonia after a surge in cases among children since August 2021. According to a news release on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, 142 juveniles have been diagnosed with pneumonia, which is above the county average and meets the state’s definition of an outbreak2. The majority of the cases have been reported in school-aged children, and some have required hospitalization3.

The health department is working with local schools, health care providers, and laboratories to investigate the cause and source of the outbreak, as well as to provide guidance and education to the public. The health commissioner, Duane Stansbury, and the medical director, Dr. Clint Koenig, have urged parents to monitor their children for signs and symptoms of pneumonia, and to seek medical attention if they suspect their child has pneumonia2. They have also advised parents to keep their children home from school if they are sick, and to follow the recommendations of their health care providers regarding treatment and isolation3.

The health department has also emphasized the importance of prevention measures, such as getting vaccinated against influenza and pneumococcal disease, washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, avoiding exposure to tobacco smoke, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle4. The health department offers free flu shots for adults and children, as well as other vaccines for children, at its walk-in clinic in Warrenton4. The health department also has a new app that provides access to forms, permits, community classes, food recall information, restaurant inspection results, and more4.

Pneumonia is a potentially life-threatening condition that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. By being aware of the symptoms, causes, and risk factors of pneumonia, and by taking preventive steps, parents can help protect their children and themselves from this serious illness.
