A vision for a global, multi-disciplinary platform to advance women’s health

Women’s health is a broad and complex topic that encompasses physical, mental, social, and environmental aspects. Women face unique challenges and opportunities in their health and well-being throughout their life course, from adolescence to old age. However, women’s health is often neglected, marginalized, or underrepresented in research, policy, and practice. This is especially true for women in low- and middle-income countries, where they face multiple barriers to access quality health care, education, and empowerment.

To address this gap, there is a need for a global, multi-disciplinary platform that can promote women’s health in all its dimensions. Such a platform would bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, advocates, and women themselves from different fields, sectors, and regions to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices. It would also foster collaboration, innovation, and advocacy for women’s health issues at local, national, and international levels.

The benefits of such a platform are manifold. First, it would generate and disseminate evidence-based information and guidance on women’s health, highlighting the diversity and complexity of women’s needs and preferences. Second, it would facilitate the exchange of ideas and resources among different stakeholders, creating synergies and partnerships for women’s health. Third, it would amplify the voices and perspectives of women, especially those who are marginalized or vulnerable, and ensure their participation and leadership in decision-making processes. Fourth, it would advocate for the recognition and integration of women’s health as a cross-cutting and priority issue in the global health agenda.

There are already some initiatives and networks that aim to create such a platform, such as the [Women’s Health Research Network], the [Global Women’s Health Initiative], and the [Women in Global Health]. However, there is still room for improvement and expansion, especially in terms of inclusivity, representation, and impact. Therefore, it is important to support and strengthen these existing efforts, as well as to encourage and enable new ones, to build a truly global, multi-disciplinary platform that can promote women’s health in all its facets.
